The Onion's claim to being "America' Finest News Source" may have its tongue pressed firmly in its cheek, but it is certainly America's most wryly ludicrous and, at times, most honest, satirical writing in the country, today. The Onion Presents Homeland Insecurity is a collection that should remind us that we, at times, take our national security and our politics far too serious, Those who have read other Onion offerings will not be surprised to find that the usual stuffed shirts are given their fair share of lampooning: "Bush Vows to Eliminate U.S. Dependence on Oil by 4920" or "Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity with New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory." But he Onion writers truly excel when exposing the inner hilarity of average idiocy: "Investigators Blame Stupidity in Area Death" or "Area Man Looking for Whatever the Hell Is Beeping." The finest material emanates from the many people who are often foolish, pathetic, and not at all heartwarming. The fake news phenomenon, now propogated to a large extent by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, has never been more culturally popular and, after twenty years, the Onion still ranks among the best at written satirical news. This collection features the entire archive from November 2004 through December 2005, and while most Onion devotees will have already read most of the content, newcomers will be thrilled to yuk and titter over the headlines and stories.Read full review
