This is one of those books that I was forced to read in High School. Little did I realize that 40 years later that this book still haunted and mesmerized me. First wrote when cancer treatment mostly consisted of surgery to cut out the cancer and the more sophisticated methods of today was invented it tells the story of a young boy's struggle against brain cancer as told by his father. Very well written, this story never was made into a movie but should have. Once read, this book's story will stick in your mind and probably urge you to take it off the shelf many times.

Written by John Gunther about the death of his son, Johnny. In the book, he records the true story of his teenage son's struggle to overcome a brain tumor, and his ultimate death at the age of seventeen. The book, published in 1949, records in simple detail all the events and tensions that made up the months that Johnny Gunther fought for his life and his parents struggle to help him through. Partly because of its stark honesty about the pain that this kind of struggle causes a family, and partly because of its refreshingly revealing portrait of a brilliant young man (he discovered a new way to liquify ammonia) struck down too young by incurable illness. The story in the book was eventually made into a TV movie in 1975, starring Robby Benson as Johnny Gunther, and Arthur Hill as John Gunther.Read full review
The book was recommended to me because I lost my son at age 25 and she thought that reading about a parent who went through the same kinds of feelings and pain, that it might help me know I wasn't alone. The book was so honest and straightforward, I had a hard time putting it down. This story is told by the father, and apparently, there were alot of note taking and record keeping throughout his son's illness, so all the details are there. It is a good, but sad book.
