I first encountered the writings of George Simon in his steller examination of Glenn Miller. His broader book on the phenomenon of the big bands as a whole is no less readable and compelling. From Goodman's willingness to break the color barrier, to Kay Kyser's interaction with Ish Kabibble, it's all here. This book is a great read, and frankly, a lot of fun. It flows well, without being excessively superficial, and covers the subject in a level of detail that can only be called loving.

One of the Bibles for Big Band Reference. It has been expanded and reprinted through the years. A great piece of music history.
