TRIDENT Restaurant Menu - Sausalito San Fran - SF Hippie Psychedelic Poster Art :
$19.95

Late 1960s - early 1970s era Psychedelia
THE TRIDENTPoster Menu{ Famous Sausalito Waterfront Restaurant }
This is a two-sided poster menufor The Trident, the legendary San Francisco Bay Area hippie restaurant located on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito near Tiburon and Larkspur in Marin County. This waterfront eatery replaced the equally famous Ondine\'s restaurant. This colorful poster menu measures 11 7/8\" x 17 15/16\". It is two-sided with printing on both sides and full of terrific psychedelic artwork. The stock is heavy and suitable for framing. The menu features artwork typical of late 1960s and early 1970s Woodstock -style rock concert posters and handbills reminiscent of The Fillmore Auditorium, Avalon Ballroom and Winterland.
Approx. 30 years later, reading the food prices on the menu is entertainment in itself:On the breakfast and lunch side of the menu:Vege-burger plate: $2.65, Quiche: $2.25, Trident Health Shake: $1.50, herb teas: 65 cents a pot, whole raw milk: 60 cents a glass.On the dinner side (dark bluish purple sky at top): Palapa Prawns: $3.95, sauteed boneless chicken: $4.35,Perrier Natural Bottled Water: $1.00, espresso: 50 cents. \"Booze\": Jamaican Coffee: $1.75, Beer on tap: 75 cents,house wine - $1.25 a 1/4 litre,Boozy Smoothies anyone? Lots of earthy and organic food fare.
This late 1960s - early 1970s style psychedelic art is from fromthe San Franciso Bay Area, the center of the hippy universe (and coincidentally was popular atthe same time as the now famous - again - Big Eyes paintings of SF artist Margaret Keane). The Trident features, on the brighter colored side (breakfast & lunch): a sun at top with new age/ spiritual symbols - yin yang, peace, - nature and earthy themes - magic mushrooms, palms or cannibus sativa leaves, sprouts etc. - mysticism, alternative religions, rainbows, flowers - golden poppies, morning glories -and animals of all kinds.The dinner side of the menu is in darker but vibrant colors and features a starry night sky with a moon andEgyptian, hippies, Native American Indian, Astronomy and Wicca imageryand perhaps a dozen or so subliminal imagery and quotes / messages... an owl for wisdom, Stonehenge, etc.
Exact date of this menu is unknown. The prices on this particular menu are circa 1971 - 1974 when the funky eatery was thee place to go for a sunny Sunday brunch. It was the place to be seen and see the local bohemian literati and known for the sexy flower child waitresses who took your orders. Other than print on side of the menu \"by Graphoto\" it\'s not stated beyond that who exactly designed the artwork. This style of psychedelic art is similar to that ofpop artists Gilbert Johnson , Bonnie MacLean , Bob Fried , Lee Conklin , Wes Wilson and Victor Moscoso to name a few.They designed concert posters and handbills for musicians such as Buffalo Springfield , Wavy Gravy , The Yardbirds , Grass Roots ,Paul Butterfield Blues Band , Cream , Procol Harum , Bola Sete , The Mothers of Invention , Quicksilver Messenger Service , Muddy Waters ,Otis Rush , Chicago Blues Band , The Mindbenders , Electric Flag , The Rascals , Big Brother and The Holding Company , Donovan , Canned Heat , Moby Grape , The Young Rascals ,The Doors, The Association , Hugh Masekela , Taj Mahal , Ten Years After , The Byrds , Savoy Brown ,The Chambers Brothers , Jerry Garcia ,Vanilla Fudge , and Iron Butterfly.Check out their old hand bills form back inthe day andcompare it to the art on the Trident menu!
