This is a circa 1900 antique Holy Name, Shrine Shadow Box Prayer Alter sick call box. Hand made of oak, this shrine was commonly used for \"house calls\" by a priest at times of sickness or death to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament. The Holy Name Alter was also used for home devotions and was a permanent fixture in many Catholic homes.The framed box was designed to fit into a permanent recess in a wall (like a medicine cabinet), but also has a wire for wall hanging, so it could be moved where needed. Exterior frame measures about 23\" tall X 13\" wide X 4\" deep. The two recess areas containing the sculptures and the sacraments is about 3\" deep. The prayer station is large and impressive.The lower box area contains a fold down alter platform held with chain and a latch and features 2 built-in decorative metal candle holders on each side of the alter. The lower alter compartment wouldhold a silver dish, a wood crucifix ( Not included ). The metal detachable candle holders are missing, and candles, or instructions are not included.The wood shadow box holds a reverse painted glass front \"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name\" and contains a chalk ware statue of Mother Mary holding the dying Jesus figure against a paper background of a church alter. Statue is about 12\" tall,painted in soft pastels and fills most of the shadow box area.
