Why are High Output T5 Fluorescent the best choice for growing plants?

Fluorescent lights have been used for over 50 years to grow plants and have come a long way since their inception. The first generation of fluorescent lamps are known as T12 lamps. These are the standard fluorescent bulb you have seen in lighting fixtures for years and are still commonly seen today in older buildings. They are big, bulky andtypically use about 40 watts each and emit only approx. 2,650 lumens per 4\' bulb. The second generation of fluorescent lamps are known as T8 lamps. They were thinner and more efficient than a T12 lamp and with a simple ballast change an older T12 fixture could be retrofit to a T8 and reap the higher output and energy savings. The newest generation of fluorescents are known as High Output T5 lamps and they are much thinner and a little shorter (about 47\" instead of 48\")than both their T8 and T12 ancestors and have a higher lumen output, better performance and higher efficiency than their predecessors. Older T8 and T12 fluorescents tend to lose much of their lumens over their lifetime, often 50% or more,leading to dimmer lighting conditions and poor performance. The new High Ouput T5 (T5HO) bulbs hold their lumens much better over their lifetime losing less than 10% of their output over their lifespans.Heat is also a factor when comparing fluorescent bulbs. The older T12 and T8 bulbshave the most output at about 77 degrees F whereas the T5HO maximizes its output around 95 degrees F. Since you can get a greater light intensity over a larger area of illumination; the 4\' length of the bulb, the T5HO fluorescent is able rival traditional grow light sources like High Intensity Discharge Lamps (HID). In fact, many studies have shown that when used properly the T5HO fluorescent can outperform similiar wattage Metal Halide HID fixtures. This is due in part because an HID bulb emits its light from a very small source, the arc tube which is about 1\" in length. This means the grower has to place the bulb/reflector higher above the plants to achieve the proper light spread over their garden area thus decreasing the Metal Halides (MH) light intensity.
