I am new to hydroponic gardening and I have small children. Are any of the materials harmful to children? Do I need to be careful about keeping them away from my garden (other than for the obvious reason of avoiding damage to my plants!!)?

Some houseplants are harmful to kids and animals but I don't know which ones.

Ron, I just finished a system that monitors pH, temperature, humidity, and light quality/quantity. I will be using this to monitor you 11 plant garden that I constructed. The unit hooks up to your computers parallel port and can be set up to log the results over time. The results can then be viewed on an easy to read graph. The system can be used to sample every hour and show the results over a long duration. As well you can set minimum and maximum levels for each variable and have the data logger set off an alarm when they hit the preset limits. So for example you can set your pH level and wait until the alarm goes off to adjust your solution. I think this would work very well for hydroponics growers. The whole thing is very cheap, if you or anyone else is interested just email me at thesteeds@telus.net .

Send me a sample to evaluate.

Greetings

I need to interview someone with practical experience in the field of hydroponics. I am doing this for a chemistry project. I need answers soon. If you can answer these questions please do. Thank you

Why did you get into hydroponics?

What is the biggest problem in hydroponics?

What seems to be the general characteristics of the plants that grow the best?

What type of work do you do?

What do you think the future holds for hydroponics?

What part of hydroponics do you feel could be improved upon the most?

Do you mix your own nutrients?

What advice would you give someone interested in the field of hydroponics?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you SO much. Pennifer Jayne

dear ron, i hate to bother you with something as simple as this but i looked on your site and you only said to get grow rocks at a grow center. i have looked up grow rocks on the net and cant find anything and have been to several nurseries and walmart and lowels and home depo and nobody knows what they are. could you please post the manufactory name of the grow rock co. so that i can start tracking them down. also could you tell me where you got your 1 hour timer that you use and if i have any favors left after all of this could you please tell me where to buy a swamp cooler pad. i love your site very much and rushed out and bought the pipe fittings so that i can start. i have been looking at hydroponics for years but it was either to expensive or complicated or something always turned me off of completing a project. your setup is one of the simplest and cheapest iv ever seen. i was wondering about the 15 min timer that you sell seams to me that this could lead to over watering. also maybe my lack of knowledge on the subject could be to blame. thank you so very much and i love your site. sincerly A_Stanley@yahoo.com

I am selling bags of growrocks now. You will have to try a greenhouse supply store to find swamp cooler pads. Grow rocks holds so much oxygen that over watering the plants is hard to do.

Just wanted to let everyone know what a crappy online business Seeds Unique is. I sent them an order and 3 weeks later they hadn't even processed it. There were e-mails in between that amount of time that I sent to them, but they never responded to them until I threatened to tell all about there business. They said they would send me my package priority mail for free and yep it is 10 days later and no package. They claim that I received my package yet they will not tell me who they used as a carrier to prove that I didnt. I dont know what is up with them or why they would do that, but stay away because who knows what they will do with your credit card number.

I recently built my first hydro garden from plans I found through your site (11-plant system). I am experiencing problems with PH, it continues to run extremely high. The solution is just at 2 weeks old, have an air stone in it and flood every 30 minutes (timer is set to flood for thirty and drain for thirty. I am checking daily and using vinegar to lower PH but problem persist. Any ideas?

vinegar won't do if you have a persistent problem with pH. I would try using real ph down.

for yr ph problem 1. buy a good ph-meter 2 use canna (dutch brand) ph- or ph+. For the plants you have in mind, the ph- level must be 5,2> to <5,6. Oon the internet their are many sites where you can find all the answers on all yr questions concerning growing yr plants. with a litte effort of course.

Your site is great and your products are too! Take a look at the garden I built in Prescott, AZ with you plans. I have a 33 gallon reservoir connected to 1 gallon, 1/2 gallon, and 2 quart bottles. Also, see one of your aeroponic units cranking as well. It works great too. Keep up the great service and nice to see you back online.

Here's the garden: http://www.cableone.net/schuttp/garden.htm

PVC greenhouse? No problem! Try this.

I have built one. You can get in it for about $150.00 or less depending on you ability to find used stuff. Its measurements are 12' by 14'. It is a bit on the short in height about 6' But works well.

I just got started in hydroponics and am having a few problems. I am using Bcuzz products and an agritest-1 meter (which does not seem to work with Bcuzz). How often do I add more nutrients? I added the correct amount to water to start off with but I have no idea how fast the system uses the nutrients? Can I just add a lot of nutrients or can over feeding cause problems?

You add nutrients every time you add water to your tank. You only add plain water if you want to dilute your solution.
You change the entire tank every two weeks or sooner if you detect a problem with your plants.

Ron, What is the best way to root tomato cuttings? Will the tomatoes not develop correctly if the cuttings have flowers on them. Im not growing indoors so i can't really adjust the light cycle.

Also, do you have a favorite homemade hydroponic design that I could try building? I'd like to try one that I could keep inside or out in case I decide to grow indoors. I built a decent water culture system as well as a scrappy ebb and flow.

Finally, I'm saving up for a MH light and mover. Where could I get a good deal? Thanks!

Trent San Clemente, CA

With vermiculite. Flowers don't matter. If they fall off they will grow more. You live in California the home of Indoor Grow Stores, You should have no trouble ordering a light close to home for shipping cost consideration.

I am looking for information and would like any pointers anyone can give me on where to find it. What I'm looking for is:

1. Measure of edible food produced per given area of common grains and vegetables. 2. Measure of Oxygen produced and CO2 recycled per given area. I am interested in making a small air-tight environmental hydroponics system. I need to know which plants produce and consume X for a given quantity of edible foodstuffs. Thanks!

Warren; You should be able to find that out from universities that deal with agriculture. If not remember the biosphere project in Arizona several years back? You might be able to find out from whoever did that project. If you do find out anything please pass it along. It would be interesting.

This is for Brian with the tall greenhouse. Brian have you thought about roll out window hardware like they used to use on mobile homes and campers? You can get the hardware at major home centers or mobile home supply stores. With a little work you could probably make a long handle to reach up and close it or put a small cheap electric gearmotor on it. If you are good at scrounging you can get everything you need free. A mobile home lot that takes trade-ins might let you have and old window or two. They are probably gonna junk it anyway. As far as the gearmotor idea goes. Check with surplus companys or with a company like McMaster-Carr. It shouldn't take a very big one to close a window. Well thats my 2 1/2 cents. Hope it was some help.

Hello Ron, your site is very nice. I am in SC California w/ a small enclosed vented 3' 1/2'' by 2' 1/2'' by 5' tall room. What is the max light? I've heard 400, but am concerned with the heat... fire? Just want to produce not reduce. What are my options if any? Thanks, Todd.

That's kind of a small pace for a 400 W. I would use 250 W. unless your hood is vented also.

Ron your sight is truly amazing... is it possible to have a room in a room that is vented to fresh air kinda sorta through the rest of the house, my question is can i due this without cutting a hole in the cieling and venting. i have a air purifier and ozone whatevernmagig and odor is not a problem so is it possible? there is always a window open. thanks, Duke.

Yes You can build a room with that Celotex insulation sheets and 2X4s. You can use the house cooling system to cool the room or place a small air-conditioned in the built room with a fan to exhaust the hot air from the larger room. You can place the air-conditioner in front of an open window instead of hanging out the window.
