i have heard of a idea of "hyper ventilating" please tell me if im just stupid and tired but is it true say if you enclose a hydroponic plant in a fish tank with the proper lighting and fill the tank for say 6 hours with co2 and then 6 hours of oxygen that the plant "hyperventilates" and forces the plant to suck up a lot of nutrients and makes it grow "beefier" and faster. i heard this idea from a pretty much rocket scientist who majored in growing plants (hydroponically) who was able to grow a choice plant in a week to say 4 feet

sounds interesting.

one more question im a beginner and have a lot of them but any way can i use ammonium nitrate and a solution of miracle grow as my mix for your 11 plant system? and if so how much ntrate should i use

Read answer above. It's calcium nitrate not ammonium nitrate. Teaspoon per gallon.

HI, IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME WITH THIS I WOULD APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH..... MY HYDROPONIC TOMATOES ARE ABOUT THREE WEEKS OLD NOW, AND THE LOWER LEAVES HAVE GONE FROM A RICH GREEN COLOR TO A YELLOWISH COLOR WITH THESE BROWN BLOTCHES DEVELOPING ON THEM. THESE LOWER LEAVES THEN SHRIVEL UP. ALL THE NEW FOLIAGE LOOKS HEALTHY, BUT WHEN NEW LEAVES START TO COME IN, THE LOWER ONES UNDER THEM BEGIN TO DEVELOPE THE BROWN BLOTCHES. IT SEEMS TO BE SPREADING TO THE UPPER LEAVES. IS THIS AN INSECT PROBLEM, OR IS IT A NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY? I HAVE ALREADY USED AN INSECTICIDE BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE HELPING. I HAVE ALSO THOUGHT OF ADDING EPSOM SALTS WITH MY HYDRO-SOLUTION FOR SOME EXTRA MICRO NUTRIENTS. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INPUT ON THIS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME SOME SUGGESTIONS. hello Ron. well your web page has really inspired me i first came here to learn how to grow a certain "bud" that u self said to learn to grow tomatos before attempting to grow that plant but im not asking you to tell me how to grow it just to tell me if what i have learned from this site is correct. the 11 plant system with the bottles about 6 to 12" apart. grow lights: florescent to grow them then hps (dont know what that means) light for flowering. (the super big question i have no answer 4): not sure what to use as a nutrient??? mirical grow?flooding 15 on 15 off. light 24hrs on then when it matures 18 on,6 off hrs. can i use a sump pump? got one really cheap. keeping temp at 72 degrees. and im going to use rboken up cleaned lava rocks for the fact of unavalibility/expence of grow rocks. and it would be computer controled. and hopefully if it grows ill keep it all to my self. if it makes a difference hydroponics from your site has inspired me to look into taking a course in collage next semester as a elective. thanx again for your help whether u answer me or not! great site!

hi ron, i read somewhere in this bulletin board that you said when plants are growing their roots at a rapid rate, due to long ebb&flow periods (say 30min on/off), they spend a lot of their energy. Could this be a reason why my plants are shorter then they should be?? thanks!

no I didn't say that and I don't think that would cause shortness. Check your pH.

Hey Ron,

How's your banana tree doing these days? I just found your site recently, and I've been tracking it's progress as I read through different pages.

Do you have a recent photo? Any fruit yet?

felix.

It has turned into 3 banana trees in a 10 gallon container. It has no more root room. The largest tree has almost stop growing because I don't think it can get enough water even though I water continuously. No bananas yet.

So, I've read a lot of places that with most nutrient solutions, you still have to add magnesium and calcium. Any idea why they aren't found in most nutrient solutions?

What purpose do they serve to the plants... or rather, what happens if the plants don't get enough magnesium and calcium?

I'm using Hydrofarm's nutrient (7-7-7) to feed my Calamondin orange tree... sitting in a gurgle system. The bottle claims 2% calcium and 0.5% magnesium. Do you think that's enough, or should I still add more?

Whew... sorry for all the questions. I've caught the hydro-bug and I'm obsessed!

thanks, felix.

Yes the commercial mix that I am using now requires that you add magnesium sulfate and calcium nitrate but Hydrofarm's  should be balance enough as is unless it says otherwise on the label.

In vermiculite or dirt is the best way then transplant them when they are 3 or 4 inches tall.

You could use a small artists paint brush. Brush the inside of all the flower on all the plants without cleaning the brush between flowers. Do this for a few consecutive days, and a few times a day. You should get pretty good pollination.

Hi to Whomesoever it matters.. HELP ...HELP...HELP.. I ma writing on behalf of the women and children of a village whose men have been either killed or disappeared in the air during the civila war that still is raging and harvesting lives in Algeria (North Africa), the women that suddenly found themselves obliged to support their families, would start a hydroponic culture starting with letu´ce as it is the easiest product to start with, these women have acquired a land about 2000 square meters and would like to use that for the production. Can anyone among you all there, help or contribute with what you may have to share in knowledge about how to start, what is needed etc... not as far as the culture itself is concerned for the time being, because the land is naked and tehre is nothing on it. Your help would be to explain what to do from scratch as to say take a step at at a time. The climate is warm and hot in summer, humid and grey in winter, there is access to nature gas for the warming if needed but the water sometimes cut off, so a recycled or closed irrigation system is highly appreciated.... so, what is to be done first ?? Build a house that will become a green house with time ?? please take it from here and share of your advice, comments, directions, tips, hints etc...and for that... your highest reward is that you are saving maybe 1000´s of ppl that have no more hope for the future in a very rich country that knows no human values..thanks in beforehand for your valuable help.. TDS ( total dissolved solids ) means just that. Even though your TDS reads OK for the maturity of the plant you are growing it does not tell you if the combination of ingredients are correct. That is why you change your solution every two weeks because there is no way of telling how off you are with only a TDS meter.

Ok so yall say this over and over... I am new to hydroponics. I started in jan this year. I tested my Ph 3 times now. It was always near 6.7 I added Ph down and it goes right back up... I have never used a tds meter, when my water gets low I replace it and throw in some of Rons hydro food. I haven't changed my water once. My garden is gorgeous. I have already ate many spinach and bibb lettuce salads. I have zucchinis out the wazoo and 40 or 50 tomatos getting ready to ripen. I think all you need is some water and some hydro solution. Keep yer bells and whistles, they aint needed. Ttucker406@aol.com

Now that's what I like to hear. I really think it's got something to do with Karma. I tell people to get your Karma right and you won't have a problem growing.

Hi ron, I have been growing tomatoes now for about a month. I am using DNF (Dutch Nutrient Formula). My plants are stunted and have a yellowing color with a lot of brown blotches on all the old leaves. I have tried using different strengths of my nutrients because i first thought that was the problem. I even added epsom salts, but none of this seems to be helping. I am thinking that the cause of the stunting and the blotches are definitely a nutrient deficiency. Is DNF a good formula? I have already ordered your Hydro-formula, and want to give that a shot. Would you recommend a quality commercial Hydro-Formula that is very reputable? Another thing...could this possibly be a fungus? Aside from Ron, if anyone else can help me with this, please feel free to email any suggestions...to Alex at Frozenroper318@aol.com Thank You!

Does anybody grow specialized lettuce, herbs, etc. for profit under grow lights and a controlled environment. I cannot find on this forum where anybody grows under grow lights. I am very interested in doing some specialty products for some restaurants around here. If anybody can point me some threads about this I would appreciate it.

Hi ron, I have just built an 11 plant system. I was wondering of you could tell me what kind of commercial solutions would be good for orchids, peppers, and cucumbers. Can I grow all three in the same garden? if not, what kind of commercial solutions would be best for each? Thanks

Forget orchids. They are air plants and only need watering every 7 days. I sell a general hydro-mix for veggies.

I have all my supplies for the 11-pot garden. I noticed that not many of your bottles are clear on the systems, is there a reason for that? or is it ok to leave them clear?

Painted bottles help cut down on the algae buildup cause by your light source hitting the water in your garden.

The bottle are painted to stop the growth of algae, and to prevent the roots of the plants from being damaged by the light.

Hey Scott,

Spray your plants with some milk. Blossom-end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency.
