I would like to know where I can get some information on making my own floating seed beds. I have plenty of 2 inch thick foam to make them out of, I just don't have any info on how they should be made. I wanted to get some seeds going and was told by several people that this is a great way to start seeds. Also, will lava rocks work for media? And are there any advantages of using a system like NFT as opposed to Ebb and Flow?

Thanks for the info

I just came from one of your stores, which I had visited for the first time since it opened. Although your prices are quite high I was pleased with your selection of gluten-free products, and was planning to shop there frequently in the future. That was changed when I heard my car and license plate described over the public address system. When I responded, I was told that they page people routinely when they think a care has been parked for too long in their lot. The car owner then must come to the customer service desk to demonstrate that he or she is, in fact, in the store. I don't like being harassed when I'm shopping, so I will use your store only when I cannot get a product anywhere else. I suggest that this policy is counter productive from your viewpoint, and extremely distasteful for customers. James Duffy, jim-jane @erols.com

That would be hard to do considering I don't have a brick and mortar store yet. I wish I owned every hydroponics store you happen to walk into I didn't invent hydroponics. And if you are talking about Worm's Way, they only advertise with me. I don't own them or any other hydroponic company that post on this web site except Pipe Dreams Hydroponics.

I cant seem to find SLD 26 PVC pipe ANYWHERE, can some body help me? Why do i have to use that type of pipe? Can`t i use a normal one that fits on the 1" T`s and elbow`s? I realy want to build my HYDRO please HELP!!!

SLD 26 is only sold in Florida stores and by me. How's that for cornering the market.
The reason is 2-liter bottle caps are 30 millimeters OD and sld 26 is 30 mm ID.

RON

do you grow marijuana not that u would post it if u did but u mite

I am a marijuana decriminalization  proponent and not afraid to speak out after living and learning the facts of our 30 year old drug war.
Everything I learned about hydroponics was from pot growing books and magazines like High Times in the early 80's because that's all I could find. "Ask Ed"
After building my first greenhouse in 1991 I had a sheriff helicopter hovering over it checking what I was growing.
My neighbors freak out. I don't know what they were growing but I was growing veggies.
I didn't realize I bought land in an area known as marijuana row.
So with a sign like Pipe Dreams Hydroponics out in front of my place do you really think I got balls big enough to try and grow pot.
I will admit that this web site was first started as my way of thumbing my nose at our elected officials for being so stupid but now has grown into a business.
And because of that you may have noticed that I do censer some pot questions because our paid politicians have passed a law making it a crime to answer such questions over the internet.
So until you pot heads start getting involved and petitioning your elective officials  we will only be growing veggies on this web site.

Do you have any experience with vertical culture? I've seen pictures of vertical NFT 3 inch PVC growing "lettuce trees" and "strawberry trees". I am planning on planting several of these in my greenhouse- is there any limit to the height of these pipes? I will be making my pipes around 7 or 8 feet tall- how many emitters should I use for each tube, and how far apart should they be?

Also, in this type of situation, how often should the pump run to water the plants? Any idea what size of pump?

Thanks, Rick

I don't have access to electricity where i am growing with the 11 Plant setup, i have found a place that sells this submersible pump that has its own battery that can last for 15hrs, only downfall is that it can only pump 20 gph per min. Will this be sufficient to leave on constantly since i can't attach a timer and will it be able to flood the required height?

It depends on how big the garden is. 20 gph is fine for a small garden. You can also use a digital timer that uses a battery for power outages. They work without plugging them into a 110 outlet.

Hi Ron Its Scott in Ontario. I would like to know if you could post a schedule that will tell what nutrient mixture you should use on growing tomatoes as the plant progresses through the different stages of growth. Ex 6 inch plant then a 12 inch plant then a 2 foot plant then in the flowering stage and then in the fruiting stage. Right now ive been using a 6-11-31 solution and know that people who grow toms in soil do a change up in fertilizer as the plant goes through the growing stages. if you have time this would be a great help to me and others, and if you could put it in a number form like 6-11-31 it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for the time you put in this web site .I visit once a day and sometimes twice to see all the very important information you provide. thank you from Canada . SCOTT

For 50 gallons of water I use the seedling mix for about 6 weeks then I switch to the mature mix to harvest.
You could add the Calcium Nitrate and Epson Salt in increments as your plants mature if you wanted to be a stickler.

Seedlings

Mature Plants

4 ounces of  Tomato Formula 4-18-38. 4 ounces of Tomato Formula 4-18-38
2 ounces of Calcium Nitrate  4 ounces of Calcium Nitrate
2 ounces of Epson Salt 2 ounces of Epson Salts
Adjust pH to 6.5 Adjust pH to 6.2

This ??? is about the 11 plant system. Could someone tell me if it would be a good idea to pump air into the pipe system when the water is not running. Would this be a good way to oxygen to the roots of the plant??

Pumping air into the piping is totally unnecessary. When the water level rises, it forces all the air out of the pipes and medium. When the water level drops, it sucks fresh air into the medium and piping. By pumping air, you would just be repeating this process.

I have a large amount of green growth on the top of my tomatoes. A friend thought they were taking up too much water and turning vegetative. He advised me to add some potash. Have you ever heard of this? How much potash do I add per gallon? I use a 4-18-38 fertilizer. Or do you think it is something else?

Hey, Ron. Wonderful site. Question: can silicone sealant be toxic to plants? I'm setting up a bubbler and want to seal a gap between a net pot and a contoured plastic lid. The silicone ideally will not come into direct contact with the plant or the water, but you never know. Thanks for your help.

Silicone is used in fish tanks so it's can't be harmful to plants unless your plants have breasts then their might be a problem.

Clear silicone sealant is will have no ill-effect on your plants. Try use the stuff the plumbers use on baths and wash basins.

I started my 11 plant garden last week....my ppm is 420....my lower leaves are turning yellow...I assume it is low in magnesium and my ppm should be higher (is it?). I am growing tomatoes (sorry). My ph went from 6.1 friday to 7.2 today also. I plan to add some epsom salt in the morning and increase my ppm. I love this site and thanks for sharing your knowledge with us..........indy

Yes your ppm should be twice that and lower the pH every day (if you have to) to keep it in the correct range.

No it ain't ok. They will start to die anytime now. Peter's does make hydroponic plant food but what you got their is for dirt. You can add some Magnesium Nitrate and some Epson salts to that and you might grow something but by using the most basic system you could use you would better off using real hydroponic plant food.

how long do you run the pump and how long between periods of running the pump

You run the pump as long as it takes to raise the water level to the desired height in any kind or size of ebb and flow garden. So it will depend on two things.

  1. How big your garden is. ( a bigger garden will naturally take longer to fill. )
  2. The size of your pump. ( a smaller pump GPH will naturally take longer to fill your garden.)

So you  wet the roots, however long that takes, ( see formula above) every 15 or 20 minutes as long as your lights are on.
Is that to hard to understand. If so get on your knees and go back to dirt.

Hey Hydro ron i am building a under ground hydro garden. The garden is 40 feet wide 120 feet long. Have you ever had any experience with a project like this. My biggest problem is controlling the under ground atmosphere, too damp. thanks for any suggestions. Itis12 feet under ground.

When the lights are on, should take care or the humidity. But when there off, you would need dehumidifiers, fans, blowers and whatever to achieve the correct growing environment.

Hello, Maybe you can help me I live in an area where there is no indoor gardening supply stores. Needless to say when buying a grow light I prefer to pay cash for fairly obvious reasons...I mean is it safe and secure to order these things online or by mail or is your name registered in some government computer as a possible drug cultivator even though it might be a shed full of tomatoes your intending to grow?? I just like my privacy thats all and I was wondering if ordering these things by mail or internet is in fact secure from the prying eyes of law enforcement. Any personal knowledge regarding this or advice? Thanks for your time.

Our government has giving law enforcement the power to do just about anything they want in the name of the war on drugs. The last Bush we had in the Whitehouse tried to put every indoor grow store out of business (Operation Green Merchant) and even harassed buyers by subpoenaing their UPS records. Now we got another Bush along with a Dick and Colon running the show now. And we all know daddy bush is pulling the strings.

All I can say is that I do not give, sell, trade any member information on this web site. I would even go as far as saying that I would not surrender my records even under the threat of jail.
I am a card carrying member of the ACLU and would love for the government to knock on my door with a subpoena.
As for them hacking into my system is another story. Ever time they bust one of those kids that hack into NASA or IBM, they slap them on the wrist and give them a job to hack for them.
That's why internet privacy legislation is so important.
