Ron, you've been a great help and we are getting ready to build a permanent greenhouse is northern Texas. I have read your sight and now have a question about how to control the temperature here when it reaches 100+ - do I understand that since I have a low dewpoint (less than 60) that I cannot use a swamp cooler and must use and air conditioner? if so, what size to you recommend of a 12 x 14 greenhouse that will get a lot of shade, but the temps are high - thx novice
Here in florida most greenhouses have to shut down the hottest months and use that time to clean the greenhouse and all the equipment for the next growing season. Some growers switch to plants that can tolerate higher heat like ornamentals and most herbs and spices. To cool it with an air conditioner it would have to be a big one because you would ware out a window model fast.
What type of rock or other media is used to hold up the plants? Wanted to know if small lava rock could be used.
I use grow rocks but small lava rock would be the next best.
I'm in the process of setting up a hydroponic system, I am going with a 400hps & 400mh I am in now in search of ideas for a sun circle. I have found them but not cheap, HELP.
Here is my first mover I built 15 years ago and it still works. Made from a barbeque rotisserie motor and a 90 degree gear reducer that weighs about 30 pounds. The light is connected to a ball barring made from a bicycle axel. The light cord is connected to a wall causing the light to rotate as the mover goes around and around. This set up will only work with one light because with two the cords would get tangled.
I am new to this type of gardening and would like to know about indoor use and lighting. I would like to know how stable the plants are in a outdoor situation when it is windy. Thanks David dngspot@kscable.com
Growing under natural sunlight is best or under sky
lights or near a sunny window helps a lot. For just indoor use MH or HPS.
As outside plants grow the wind causes small tears in the stems thus strengthening
them. That is why it is important to add a lot of fans to an indoor garden to
help strengthen the stems to be able to hold up those big juicy fruits.

When you plant in the bottles using the cups, what medium are you putting into the plastic cups that you have your seeds in?
I start my seeds in vermiculite and then transplant them to the 16 oz solo cups with grow rocks.
When you place the cups in the bottles, are the cups "planted" into a medium such as gravel?
The cup with the plant sits inside the 2-liter bottle.

hi there, I am very new to this and have a question, I am an architectural student and am designing a building which houses hydroponic tomatoes. I just want to know what the minimum height at which I can build my greenhouse would be or is that a how long is a piece of string question? is it really just case of how many tomatoes I want to grow will depend on the size of greenhouse??

It depends on the type of tomato plants you grow. Some tomato plants can grow up to twelve ft. high.

Hi Ron just found that I can at long last post to the bulletin board. Does the PVC glue work well for the gluing of the bottle caps into the 1" pipe or should I stay with the epoxy?

Ron, When you germinate your seeds in moistened vermiculite, do you pack it down at all?
No I pour the solution in the tray and let it soak up from the bottom and then poke a hole with a nail about 1/2 inch deep and place the seeds in the hole and gently cover the hole.
One more question: How long do you wait before you start using a water soluble fertilizer on the seedlings?
Once the seeds spout and show the second set of leaves then you can give them a dose of about 500 ppm of solution.

I am very impressed with your site. I have not built a system yet as I have to move frequently. I retire in 3 years and plan to move down to South America to help people become more self-sustaining. This site is one of the many I have been studying as a resource. I hope it is still up for three more years.

Ron, We are totally new at this, but of course we are trying to reinvent everything. Question: Can we attach a sensor to one of the 2 liter bottle that will turn pump on, thus no timer and a better way of watering?? I know it probably been done and failed. Thanks, Al
I thought about the sensor idea. I even bought a rain gauge for lawn watering system to see if could covert it to my use. I wanted to find a way to shut off the pump when the water reaches a certain height in the bottles. That part is easy but when the pump shuts off and the water lowers below the sensor it would come on again to soon. You would still need some way to reset it to come on again every 30 minutes or so.

Living in Botswana and working in the clothing industry, I would like to start a small commercial operation and I am thinking of growing vegetables. I do think this systems could be an answer in this country. So the question is how much experience does one need on hydroponics or is this only for high qualified agricultural engineers. Why don't you put a advertisement on ebay to let people know who you are. Also, So you can get the credit that you deserve rather that this guy stealing your pictures. I believe that you said you originally got the idea from a high times long ago. You can tell people about your web site. To bad you don't sell your hydro nutrients any more. You could sell that stuff on there and your pre-cut 11 plant systems. When people buy them, I bet you could whip up one in 5 minutes flat. Have it in the mail the next day and cash in YOUR pocket. "Food for thought"
I have been selling gardens for years and that's not the
problem. After building them, boxing them up for shipping, driving to the UPS
office, it was a lot of work for very little profit.
Hydroponic How To software is what I am working on now.
-I found a 50-60 adjustable pump in home depot (also saw the same pump at Lowe's and a local garden shop) for 20$. This works great for my larger systems. I also found a timer that can be set as low as 15 minute intervals for 10$ at Walmart.
What type of pump is used for the top drip system? I am assuming that a top drip system would have a very low GPH flow. Where could I find one of these?
Same kind. A larger GPH submersible pump can be used with smaller gardens with a flow control valve to lower the (gallon per hour).
Hay Ron, I have installed a cooling system that works pretty well. It consists of 100 feet of 2 inch PVC pipe buried 4 feet underground in a closed loop ( the greenhouse is also underground). I use two small fans one to push the air into the loop and the second to pull air out. Going in, it has been as warm at 110 degrees, but it always comes out at around 60 degrees. Since it is closed looped I can also use CO2 and not worry about air lose. I thought I would pass this along to the list.
Tell me more. How large of an area are we talking about to bury the 100 ft. of pipe. Did you use a trencher to dig the hole. How big is your greenhouse and how cool does it get.
Ron, I finally completed my greenhouse and now I need info on its operation. Does anyone have URLs for good greenhouse operation info.

I purchased a peat pellet greenhouse and the seeds have grow but I don't know when I should take off the plastic topper or when I should plant the seedlings in another pot?
Take the hood off after the seeds spout. You can let them grow in the pellets until you see roots then transplant them into larger containers.
